Winters are the most notorious time for rodents to make themselves at home in your home. They want warm cozy places to wait out the colder weather. Often homes and businesses become the prime target for rats and mice. There are many species of rodents you might face this winter from House or Deer mice, to Norway or Roof rats. There are, of course, many ways to prevent and control rodent invasions. Woodland Davis Termite & Pest Control will share a few tips on preventing and controlling rodents this winter.

Mouse & Rat Prevention

You will always want to prevent rodents from invading your home. Prevention will greatly help your home from becoming less of a target and make it much easier to control any rodent invasion. Start your prevention program outside. Having a well groomed yard isn’t just to please HOA’s but also to help prevent many pests. Yard debris or even wood stack piles will bring rodents along with many other pests closer to your home. Clutter and debris create a feeding ground as well as provide shelter for a variety of rodents. By keeping your yard cleaned and bushes trimmed, you eliminate these so called resorts for rodents. Next, check the outside of your home. Look for cracks or spaces in windows or doorways where rodents can slip through. Mice have a unique ability to flatten their body, and can slip through a crack the width of a pencil. Your next challenge is sealing these entry points that rodents use. Rats will climb on roofs and slip through chimneys and attic vents too. These larger openings should be sealed with wire mesh to prevent rodents from crawling inside your home. Repair any leaky drains or pipes outside of the home as well. Providing unintended water sources, regardless of how good your other prevention methods are, will still invite rodents to come into your home. Finally, leave no discarded food in or outside your home. Make sure all food is properly contained in air tight sealed containers; something rodents won’t be able to chew through.

Rodent Control

Once you have a rodent problem it is a lot more difficult to deal with. Of course make sure the inside of your home is cleaned and food is properly packed away from rodent access. Now you will need to look into bait, poisons and traps. There are many types of traps on today’s markets. There are live capture traps and life taking traps. Live capture is actually more popular than those designed to kill. Many homeowners don’t like the smell of a dead rodent in their home and would rather have a pest control company deal with the live rodent. Depending on the circumstances, you many even want to use baits or poisons. However it is strongly recommended to only use poisons if necessary. Often rodents die where homeowners can’t reach or even find them. That means you will have a rotting rodent somewhere in your home. You may want to contact your local pest control company to set up a good rodent control program that will benefit you and your home.

About 2 months ago I had a solar system installed on my roof. Almost immediately the neighborhood pigeons moved in and began nesting and generally making a mess under the panels. Not only that, they woke up my wife and I every Saturday and Sunday morning at 7 AM like clockwork with the pitter patter of their little claws and cooing. This had to stop! So, I installed an exclusion mesh around the open edges of the panels and then spikes on all the flat roof surfaces as well as the chimney and vents. This should give me some piece of mind as well as a few more hours of sleep on the weekends.

If you are having problems with birds or bats, please give Woodland-Davis Termite & Pest Controla call for a free inspection and bid for exclusion.

California is home to a variety of wildlife, plants, and insects. When it comes to spiders, Woodland and Davis in Yolo County, California is most familiar with three different species that are more common than others. These species are the tarantula, the black widow, and the brown recluse. Yolo County California provides an excellent living environment for these spiders to thrive and multiply in, making them a common pest to come across. These are species of spiders that should be taken seriously as they can pose a threat to your health and their bites can be quite painful.

Is a Hairy Tarantula Spider’s Bite Really Venomous?

Tarantulas are known for being probably the hairiest  spider  that is in existence and can grow to extremely large size in comparison to other species of spiders. There are over 900 different species of tarantula in the world today and many experts believe there are species of tarantula that have yet to be identified. All tarantulas are venomous, however, there has yet to be a fatality reported due to a tarantula bite. People that have had the unfortunate experience of being bitten by a tarantula have expressed that it is more painful than that of a wasp sting.

Black Widow Spider Bite Facts

The black widow  has become a familiar spider not only in Yolo County, California but throughout the United States. The black widow spider is highly recognizable due to the red hour glass shape  that is found on its abdomen. Black widow females rip the head of males after they have mated with them. The female is venomous while the male is not. The male does not live very long to pose much of a threat anyway. Black widow spiders are excellent at hiding in areas that are rarely frequented. Bites often occur when someone is reaching into an area that they cannot see, like a poorly lit shelf, into a box or other secluded areas.

Brown Recluse Spider Bite Stages

The brown recluse spider  also has a very recognizable mark on its body; many have said the marking on a brown recluse resembles that of a brown violin or viola. The brown recluse spider is venomous and its bite has been known to be fatal. Yolo County, California provides many areas for these spiders to thrive and multiply, making the chances of one crawling into your home quite possible. If you are experiencing the presence of these spiders or any other pest inside or around your home, contact Woodland Davis Termite and Pest Control Inc.  today.

Woodland, California provides a thriving environment for termites, especially this time of year. The oriental cockroach is a species of cockroach that is usually a shiny, reddish-black insect. They are also known as waterbugs as they prefer dark and moist places to hide. The adult will reach up to about one inch in length, which is quite large for a cockroach species. The interesting thing about oriental cockroaches is that the male can be distinguished from the female by their wings. The adult males have a three quarter length wing and the female lacks wings altogether. Even though the male has wings, they are not able to take flight.

How do Oriental Cockroaches Get in My House?

Oriental cockroaches enter your home in many ways, including through drain pipes or open drains, cracks in the foundation and holes in window screens etc. Cockroaches can even stroll in through an open door! In order to thrive, Oriental cockroaches need a place to hide as well as nearby food and water sources. They prefer warm places with a relatively high humidity. You can find Oriental cockroaches wherever there is moisture; like a damp basement, a garage or even in the washing machine. Oriental cockroaches are mainly nocturnal and can, therefore, be elusive in that a casual inspection of an infested dwelling during the day may show no signs of activity.

Are Oriental Cockroaches Dangerous – Do they Bite?

While oriental cockroaches do not bite or sting, they can be dangerous to people. These pests live their life around water and warm areas which mean they tend to have more bacteria on their body. They live near garbage cans, garbage disposals and in bathrooms. But that does not mean that they will stay in these warm and moist areas. They will venture out for food, and that means heading straight for your kitchen. The Oriental cockroach will walk over kitchen counters in search of food and can even crawl into cupboards and pantries into food that is not sealed properly. Just like any other species of cockroach, oriental cockroaches can also cause allergic reactions to people that suffer from asthma.

Oriental Cockroach Control

If you find yourself having a problem with oriental cockroaches or any other pest, you should call a professional like Woodland-Davis Termite and Pest Control  right away! If you have seen just one pest, that usually means there are much more hidden behind appliances and cabinets. This could mean a bigger problem than you thought! Plant Rose Bushes this Spring

Roses  are the most popular flower planted by far, and for first-timers, there are a few steps that should be taken to ensure your roses look their best. It is important to consider location before you begin digging into the soil to plant your roses. Roses should be planted where they can receive at least five to six hours of full sunlight per day. Roses that are planted in areas that do not receive enough sunlight will slowly die off and possibly never fully bloom. When planting your roses it is also important to remember not to crowd them with other plants nearby. Be sure to keep your bare root roses in water until the moment you are ready to put them in the ground. Also be sure to wear proper gloves when planting roses, as they do have very sharp thorns that can pierce your skin. There are a handful of insects that will enjoy feasting on your roses if you do not take the proper steps to protect your plant. Japanese beetles, Aphids, and spider mites  are all insects that will destroy your roses. Be sure to remove dead leaves and canes to reduce the number of pests that come into your garden.

As we move into the summer months the days get longer and mosquitoes  are out with a vengeance. Mosquitoes can ruin a barbecue, picnic or outdoor sporting event in little to no time. As the outdoor temperature continues to increase, so does our internal body temperature, which in turn causes our bodies to cool down by perspiring. The human body produces over 340 chemical odors during perspiration. Mosquitoes are especially attracted to a chemical in our sweat called Octenol. Some people produce more of this chemical than other people. This explains why some of us are more susceptible to mosquito bites than others.

Nuisance Mosquitoes

The Spanish translation for mosquito is “ little fly ” and in Australia, mosquitoes are called “ Mozzies ”! No matter where you are from we all agree that mosquitoes are a nuisance! There are approximately 175 species of mosquitoes in the United States alone. Female mosquitoes can lay as many as 300 eggs at one time. Mosquitoes spend their first 10 days of life in water predominantly stagnant water.

Irritating Mosquito Bites

Only female mosquitoes bite. The females need the protein in our blood to help her eggs grow and develop. Mosquitoes don’t actually have teeth; they bite with a long serrated mouthpiece called a proboscis. They use the proboscis to pierce the skin and locate a capillary. As the mosquito sucks blood with the first proboscis, a second proboscis pumps saliva containing a mild painkiller and an anti-coagulant. The majority of people bitten have a mild allergic reaction to this saliva which causes the area around the bite to swell and itch.

Mosquito Attractants

Mosquitoes find their targets by detecting human breath and following carbon dioxide  that is released when we exhale. Mosquitoes also use heat sensors  around their proboscis to detect the warmth of our bodies and the blood inside it. Dark clothing attracts mosquitoes; darker clothing retains more heat than light colored clothing.

Disease Spreading Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are annoying but they can also spread disease. Mosquitoes spread diseases such as West Nile virus, Malaria, and Dengue fever. West Nile virus was first detected in the United States in 1999. This disease is also found in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Mexico, and Canada. West Nile virus first appeared in California in 2003 and by 2004, the disease had spread across the state.

Mosquito Prevention Tips

Here are some tips from Woodland-Davis Termite and Pest Control  to help you protect yourself. To avoid being bitten by mosquitoes:
– Skip scented soaps, lotions and hair products when heading outside for the day.
– Whenever possible wear light-colored clothing with long sleeves. You may also wish to apply a personal insect repellent and apply extra protection by using a repellent especially designed for use on clothing.
– Remove any standing water from your property. Check for items such as buckets, or other containers and be sure to clean any debris that may have collected in gutters or other drainage systems. Change water regularly in decorative items like birdbaths and fountains.
– If you are fishing or hiking by mindful of heavily wooded areas, and lakes and ponds. These areas are often a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Winter has come to an end and warmer weather is greeted happily with backyard barbecues, children playing outside and spring landscape projects. However, there are some aspects of warmer weather that are not so welcomed. It is termite swarming season, and it is essential that homeowners learn all they possibly can about this destructive pest, so homes are better protected from the havoc a termite infestation can cause. Termites are responsible for over five billion dollars worth of structural damage each and every year.

Termite Swarming Season

As soon as temperatures begin to rise, termites begin to swarm and flourish, making spring their busiest time of year. Once a termite colony successfully gains access to the inside of your home, they will chew through concrete, wood, carpeting, flooring and wallpaper twenty-four hours a day. Homeowners usually notice they have a termite problem during the swarming season. This is a time when termites are working hard to expand their colonies. However, often times, termites are already present in the home before being discovered during swarming season.

Sure Signs of Termites

There are a few sure signs that your home is in danger of being damaged by the presence of termites. Termites create tunnels made of mud that lead in, over and under wood structures. Keep a look out for any sign of these mud tunnels, where they come from and where they are leading to. Any wood structure or tree trunk that has been rotted out  or darkened in color are other indications that termites are living on your property.

Proactive Termite Prevention

It is a good idea to be proactive and stop termites before they even have a chance at destroying your property. Some simple steps you can take to reduce the risk of a termite infestation include eliminating any moisture  around your home’s foundation.  Seal cracks and holes  to prevent termite entry. Do not stack firewood or lumber next to your home. Inspect wood carefully  before bringing it into your home. Keep tree branches and other landscape trimmed  and away from your house. Reduce the humidity  in your home’s crawl spaces with proper ventilation. Most importantly, if you suspect any sign of termites in your home or on your property, contact Woodland-Davis Termite & Pest Control , Inc to schedule a professional termite inspection. A termite inspection will determine how serious your termite problem or infestation may be. Contact Woodland-Davis Termite & Pest Control for the best and most effective termite control service available.

If it seems like your home or yard has become infested with giant mosquitoes, don’t panic. You are probably dealing with a Crane Fly infestation that could be threatening to your landscape, but poses no threat to humans. It is not the adults who are the culprits, but their larvae that can damage vegetation in your yard. They can be very damaging to lawns and plants because they feed voraciously on plant material and leave visible brown marks wherever they roam.

Crane flies get their name for their disproportionately long legs. They have often been called “mosquito hawks” because of a widespread myth that Crane Flies eat mosquitoes, which they are actually incapable of doing. During warmer seasons of the year, crane flies can become an annoying and damaging pest throughout California. They tend to inhabit warmer and wetter environments such as woodlands, streams, and lawns.

Much like the mosquito, they are numerous around water deposits. Often, they can find their way into people’s homes and are attracted to light just like moths. In spite of not causing any damage, they can be irritating due to their swarming nature. If you have a crane fly infestation in your yard, initially you’ll notice mild plant and lawn damage in the form of brown spots. Over time, you will start to notice what looks like huge mosquitoes drifting around your property. If you do not take the proper steps to contain them, they could infiltrate your home in large numbers.

If you are facing an infestation of crane flies, mosquitoes or any other pests, don’t hesitate to call  The Local Guys today for a free pest control quote! We have provided home and business owners effective, lasting pest control since 1980  and can resolve any of your pest control concerns.

Flight of the Living Dead

Honeybees are one of the most beneficial insects in the world. In America, honeybees are responsible for 80% of all insect pollination, pollinating about 1/3 of American agricultural crops. Honeybees often have to face extreme temperatures, infestations, and plant viruses, but they may now be facing a new plague.

A parasitic fly, called Apocephalus Borealis, has been laying eggs inside of common honeybees. These “zombie flies”, as they are sometimes called, turn the bees into unwilling hosts of the fly’s maggots which lead to the eventual slow and painful death of the honeybee. This process can take a few weeks and as it progresses the bee starts exhibiting odd behavior such as jerky flight, disorientation and abandoning the hive at night. Eventually, the maggots erupt from the host honeybees’ body. John Hafernik, a bee expert at San Francisco State University said, “It’s sort of a combination of zombies and aliens mixed together.”

Although scientists do not think there is a significant threat to honeybees at this time, infected “Zombees” have been found in California, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington and recently in Vermont.

Regardless of what kind of bee they may be, spring time is quickly approaching and bee populations will become active again soon. If you have unwanted honeybees near your home or business, don’t hesitate to call The Local Guys at Woodland-Davis Termite and Pest Control  for a free inspection! We can confirm there is a hive being established and then provide referrals for qualified bee relocation experts to ensure your family is safe from any threatening pests.
