Subterranean Termites

Of the two types of termites in our area, subterranean are the most common. There are two ways to deal with them – bait and chemicals. Baiting is the process of installing stations around the perimeter of your home with bait that contains an insect growth regulator. Termites eat this bait and take it back to the nest to feed to the queen and her young. By doing this, the entire colony can be eliminated. The system we use is call Sentricon. 

Chemical treatment can take several forms – trenching the soil, drilling through concrete and injecting, spraying under raised foundation homes, injecting into wall voids, and foaming. We have several chemicals at our disposal including Termidor, Altriset, Termidor Dry, and Premise Foam. These chemicals all work in different ways, but do the same thing – kill termites. Drywood Termites

Drywood termites differ from subterranean termites in that they don’t live in the soil. They live in sound wood. They can enter your home during their annual swarming season (August – October) or by being brought in on a piece of lumber, new or antique furniture, or fire wood. There are three ways of dealing with drywood termites – physical removal of the infested wood, whole house fumigation, or local chemical treatment. Physical removal is the most destructive, especially if they are in the structure, not just the furniture. Fumigation is guaranteed to kill 100% of the drywood termites but you must do quite a bit of preparation first, and move out of your home for three days. Local chemical treatment is the most convenient however there is no guarantee that all the infestations will be eliminated. Your inspector can help you decide which method is best for your situation.
